Learning, growing, giving back
Through technology and education, Wesley Powell pursues his goal of helping others while capitalizing on new opportunities.
"A fulfilling life is defined by making a positive impact, helping others, embracing new experiences, and continuously learning. I want to say I tried everything, took every opportunity, and left the world better than I found it."
Guided by a commitment to lifelong learning and making a difference, Wesley discovered his passion for cybersecurity and information systems, a field aligned with his values.
He credits Professor Gabe Piccoli for igniting his passion for information systems, a field at the intersection of business and technology.
"His class (ISDS 3100 Foundations of Information Systems) was challenging yet incredibly engaging, and his passion for the subject was both contagious and inspiring. Gabe's ability to bring concepts to life through storytelling and practical hands-on assignments made a lasting impact on me, fostering my enthusiasm for the field. More importantly, he helped me realize that information systems aren't just about technology—it's about people. I credit him for igniting my interest in information systems, and I'm grateful for the engaging learning experience he created."
Inspired by this experience, Wesley helps other students discover their passion for the field by serving as an undergraduate teaching assistant for information systems courses and holding weekly office hours to provide one-on-one support for students.
In addition to selecting a concentration in cyber risk, Wesley strengthened his skillset with minors in analytics and internal auditing. He names the Center for Internal Auditing & Cybersecurity Risk Management (CIA&CRM) as one of the most valuable learning experiences during his time at LSU, crediting the program with helping him to become a well-rounded professional capable of meaningful engagement with practitioners.
During his summer 2024 internship at Vulcan Materials Company, Wesley tested IT-SOX controls in change management, automation, and logical security. He also researched and documented AI-related risks, recognizing how artificial intelligence is reshaping cybersecurity. Looking ahead, he sees AI as both a powerful tool and a potential threat, emphasizing the need for proactive defense strategies.
"I think one of the most pressing challenges in cyber risk and information systems will be the use of AI to advance targeting. It can help cybercriminals penetrate systems in ways we've never seen before. And I think one way we can help combat or mitigate this is by using AI to set up new types of defenses."
Wesley's pursuit of professional credentials will enhance his career trajectory. He is currently studying for the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) exam, with his preparations aided in part by the lessons taught in ISDS 4244 Information Systems Auditing. Independently, Wesley is studying for the CompTIA Security+ certification, which covers "all types of security and AI." Eventually, he plans to become a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
With a strong cybersecurity, analytics, and risk management foundation, Wesley is ready to launch his career. He will return to Atlanta to join Grant Thornton, where he will focus on strategic assurance and system and organization controls (SOC) services. No matter where his journey takes him, one thing is sure: Wesley will continue to learn, innovate, and help others navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape.
