Stephenson Department of Entrepreneurship and Information Systems Professor Young H. Chun published a single-authored research paper in the Journal of the Operational Research Society in 2020 titled, “Information Economics Approach to the Performance Evaluation of Error-Prone Internal Auditors,” that was named one of three runners-up for the journal’s Goodeve Medal. The Goodeve Medal is awarded annually for the best paper published in the Journal of the Operational Society in the previous year.

Chun’s paper explored two types of errors that internal auditors may make when analyzing financial records: when the internal auditor classifies correct payments as incorrect (type I error) or fails to detect some incorrect payments (type II error). Chun used various methods of estimating (i) the internal auditor’s two types of errors and (ii) the total number of incorrect records treating each internal auditor as an information structure with imperfect information to calculate the value of information via an information economics approach. He used the same approach to measure and compare the performances of multiple internal auditors with different type I and II errors.

The Journal of Operational Research Society (JORS) has published 12 times a year since 1950 and is one of the premier journals in the field of operational research. Created in 1948, the Journal of Operational Research Society is the flagship journal of The Operational Research (OR) Society. The OR Society, headquartered in Birmingham, England, is the world's oldest-established learned society catering to the OR profession, and one of the largest in the world, with members in 53 countries.

The Goodeve Medal was named in memory of Sir Charles Frederick Goodeve, who was one of the founders of The OR Society and pioneers of civilian operational research and a past leader of the OR Club and The OR Society. The medal recognizes the most outstanding contribution to the philosophy, theory, or practice of OR published in the Journal of the Operational Research Society (JORS) every year. As one of this year’s runners up, The OR Society will make Chun’s paper free to access for 12 months via its publisher, Taylor & Francis Group.
