Use VA Benefits at LSU

Step 1: Apply for your benefit online via VA.gov

  • Form 22-1990 for Veterans of all Chapters (33, 30, 1607, [1606 – Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) is required])
  • Form 22-1990E for Dependents and Spouses using Ch. 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill® Transfer of Entitlement
  • Form 22-5490 for Dependents and Spouses using Ch. 35 DEA: Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program

After 4-6 weeks the VA will mail you a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) stating that you have been awarded an educational benefit. Our office requires a copy of this document before we can process your benefits.

If you are Ch. 31 VR&E, your counselor will need to send our office your Purchasing Order (PO).

Step 2: Register with the VA

Create an account on the VA.gov. This is where you will go to check your deposits from the VA along with the history of your certification status and months of benefit remaining, setup direct deposit or update your address.

Step 3: Enroll in Classes

Our office will only be able to certify your enrollment once your courses have been added to your schedule. Please do not submit a request until your schedule has been completed.

Step 4: Request Enrollment Certification from LSU Department of Veterans Affairs

Once your schedule is finalized and you have registered for your courses, you may complete the LSU Enrollment Certification Form. Check to be sure all areas have been addressed correctly before submitting. You must complete a new LSU Enrollment Certification Request form for each semester you plan to use VA Educational Benefits. Please allow up to 30 days for the processing of your benefits.

Step 5: Complete Registration

Once your benefits are applied to your account, you must complete your registration on your MyLSU account to secure your schedule. If you do not complete your registration by the payment deadline your classes will be purged.

Tuition Assistance (TA)

Based on your active military or veterans status, you may be eligible for Tuition Assistance (TA), which would allow your armed service to cover up to 100% of your LSU tuition.

Each service has its own criteria for eligibility. Please contact your service's Educational Service Officer (ESO) or counselor before enrolling at LSU to determine your eligibility.
