From artistry to dentistry—Logan Coe’s journey at LSU showcases the perfect blend of science, creativity, and compassion.
Logan Coe is a rising star in the world of pre-dental studies. Recently named the recipient of the 2025 Dr. Michael Krochak Pre-Dental Scholarship, Logan’s passion for dentistry stems from a unique blend of science and art. Raised by artist parents, he was naturally drawn to a field that merges creativity with precision. Logan impressed the scholarship committee with his creativity in his essay, where he wrote, "By combining empathy, a passion for challenges, a commitment to the balance of art and science, and a desire to build meaningful relationships with my patients, I aim to create a practice that surpasses both my own expectations and those of my community." His award-winning essay beautifully compared the different types of teeth and their functions to the many reasons he aspires to be a dentist—recognizing not only the role of oral health in overall well-being but also the power of a confident smile.
At LSU, Logan excels as a student, but his impact extends through leadership, research, and community service. A Biological Sciences major with minors in business administration and psychology, he is also a Flagship Scholar Resident and recipient of multiple scholarships and grants, including the Innovation Grant, which have supported his academic journey. Whether dissecting marine life in a research lab, mentoring young students as a camp counselor, or volunteering in his community, Logan embodies the well-rounded, driven spirit of LSU’s College of Science. His journey is a testament to how passion, creativity, and dedication can shape a future in healthcare.

Where Science Meets Art
Logan’s passion for dentistry is deeply personal. Growing up surrounded by artist parents, he saw firsthand how science and creativity intersect. "In the world of dentistry, the aesthetics of beauty occupy a position of utmost importance," he explains. His fascination with the craft solidified after shadowing a dentist and witnessing the meticulous skill required to mold and match crowns to their surrounding teeth.
Logan’s inspiration also comes from his science role model, Dr. Paul Armbruster. "Although I had considered a career in pre-dentistry for a while, after Dr. Armbruster spoke to my anatomy class about dentistry and orthodontics, I knew for certain that this was the path I wanted to follow," Logan shares. From his colorful storytelling to his friendly demeanor, Dr. Armbruster showed Logan the profound impact that restoring a smile can have on a person’s confidence and overall attitude.

Beyond the Classroom
Logan’s academic journey has taken him far beyond textbooks. He has been an active member of the LSU Pre-Dental Society and the LSU Red Cross Club, where he combined his academic interests with service. Through volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank and the Recreation and Park Commission for East Baton Rouge Parish (BREC), he has reinforced his commitment to community engagement.
His research experiences have also been unique. During his first year at LSU, he worked in Dr. Polito’s lab in the College of the Coast and Environment, conducting dissections on various fish and shrimp. "Tasks included scraping out and grinding muscle to be placed in vials and weighed. Despite the lingering smell—and now an aversion to sushi—it was a pleasure to be part of this 'seaworthy' exploration," he recalls with humor.
You’re not in this alone. The journey may be demanding, but collaboration and mutual assistance among peers can pave the way for success.
Beyond his studies, Logan embraces a diverse set of interests. He has embarked on road trips across 38 states, capturing moments through photography. An award-winning public speaker, he also immerses himself in culinary adventures as a foodie, appreciates art, revels in music festivals, and maintains an active lifestyle as a long-distance runner. For students aspiring to follow a similar path, Logan advises embracing challenges and leveraging peer support. "You’re not in this alone. The journey may be demanding, but collaboration and mutual assistance among peers can pave the way for success," he emphasizes.
LSU’s Pre-Health Advantage
The LSU College of Science PreHealth Advising, Support, and Education (PHASE) program provides students, like Logan, with a strong academic foundation and the flexibility to tailor their education to their interests and career goals. Rather than requiring a specific major, medical and dental schools value applicants with diverse academic backgrounds, encouraging a broad education that includes natural sciences—such as biology, chemistry, physics, and math—along with social sciences and humanities. This approach allows students to develop critical thinking, communication skills, and a well-rounded perspective essential for healthcare professions. The strength of LSU’s pre-health preparation is reflected in the 2024 Entering Class Statistics, with students gaining acceptance into 28 allopathic MD schools, 10 osteopathic DO schools, 13 dental schools, and 5 optometry schools. Notably, 75% of those accepted into MD, DO, DDS, and OPT programs for Fall 2024 were College of Science majors, highlighting the College’s role in preparing students for these rigorous fields. Additionally, 78% of applicants took advantage of the LSU Premedical/Predental Review Committee, a resource designed to help students refine and strengthen their applications to professional schools. For those unsure between two fields of study, exploring each major’s curriculum and reviewing the prerequisites and recommended courses for professional schools can provide valuable guidance in making an informed decision. Logan’s journey—where science, art, and service intersect—exemplifies how LSU’s pre-health programs empower students to carve unique paths to success in healthcare.
