Biography
Len Apcar holds the Wendell Gray Switzer Jr. Endowed Chair in Media Literacy. He is
a fellow at the Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs and a professional-in-residence.
He teaches advanced reporting, writing and a class in how information passes through
society. He leads a large research project on news consumption, democracy and the
American dream. He is a frequent speaker to civic groups about the problem of fake
news and social media. He also leads a group of Manship students to a summer media
academy in Austria where he is a faculty member. In a nearly 40-year professional
career at The New York Times and at The Wall Street Journal, he was a correspondent,
a Washington editor and chief Asia editor. He was a web pioneer as editor-in-chief
of the award-winning nytimes.com. As chief Asia editor based in Hong Kong, he helped
create a 24-hour global newsroom for the Times for online and print.
He holds an M.S. from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and a B.A. in political science with honors from Claremont McKenna College in California.
